You're on mute

Published on Sep 4, 2020

There are three words that will shape the year 2020. They are "you're on mute". Now you might argue that "you're" might be two words, but it is a contraction of "you are", and so that makes it one word.

Hardly a day goes past when I am in a video call for work, trying to be heard, only to have someone else on the call say, "you're on mute".

When you are unmuted on a video call, the background noise can be a little distracting and annoying. The noise is amplified when you have a lot of people on the call, and their kids or dog are playing up in the background. In this situation, mute makes a lot of sense.

I wonder what other aspects of my life would enjoy having a mute button? It would be great to mute the traffic noise. What about muting that noisy party, the one that is keeping me awake at night.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Being able to mute your partner or a close friend sounds like a good idea. Mmmm, maybe not.

It's time to get a t-shirt printed with the words, "you're on mute", just as a souvenir of this crazy year.
