I’m typing this on my brand new 15” MacBook Pro, released days ago. I thought the keyboard would bother me more than this, but honestly I kinda like it. As I was setting up this laptop and still using the old one, to get serial numbers and such I found myself not liking the old-style keyboard as much.

My old MBP was the 15” mid-2015 model, which I believe is one of the last ones (if not THE last) before Apple started messing with all the ports, added the Touch Bar and had all those keyboard problems. Fingers crossed that this version has actually addressed those previous keyboard issues.

Touch Bar

The Touch Bar is kinda gimmicky and thus far I haven’t done much with it, but I was reading about some hacks and tips for making it more useful. One of these days I’ll try some of those out.

It’s noticeably lighter than my other MBP and I was surprised to see that it’s not as tall. It’s about half an inch shorter, both because the overall laptop is thinner and because the bezels around the screen are smaller.

It’s blazing fast, I gotta say. Of course that’s because it’s new and not bogged down with 3 years’ worth of crap. But the 8 cores have to be helping at least a little :)

The trackpad is enormous compared to my other machine, which is a great improvement. It’s one of those things that I was completely fine with but now that I have the extra pad space I’d miss it if it was gone.

Battery Life

I haven’t used it just on battery power much yet but I sat down to write this and I was at 100% and I’m already down to 94%. How long do you think it took me to write those words up there? 10 minutes maybe?

I have an app called Endurance that shows me how long I’ve got left and it’s saying 3 hours and 17 minutes. That’s absolute BS, if you ask me. I’ve got next to nothing open right now. I HAD Slack open and have since closed that, since it’s apparently a bit of a battery drainer.

Apple says this on its website:

  • Up to 10 hours wireless web
  • Up to 10 hours iTunes movie playback

I HIGHLY doubt that, frankly. We’ll see how it holds up the next time I decide to run it to 0%. If I can’t count on this thing to let me work remotely without a charger for at least 3 hours that’s quite sad. My 17” MBP from freakin’ 2008 had a hard time staying charged for that long but surely we’ve come a long way in over a decade such that I can get better than that?

It’s definitely quiet. I don’t hear it at all. No fans spinning up or anything like my 2015 model. It’s a little warm but nothing too crazy.

So far I’m pleased with it and look forward to putting these 8 cores to the test, as well as the battery.

@nicksimard Glad to hear the keyboard seems to be better. I do love a Mac trackpad. It is the best in the business. I can't imagine out of the box your battery would be draining that much. I would say you should be able to get a solid 6-8 hours of heavy use. It will be interesting to see your results after road-testing.

@efran I'm sure there are some amazing Windows machines out there. I just haven't touched Windows since....oh gosh...2009 I think. I mean, I've used Windows but only when it was absolutely necessary :)

@nicksimard @efran The problem with Windows machines is...Windows. I've only purchased one Windows laptop specifically for gaming. I hadn't used it for years and recently dusted it off to play...drum roll....Warcraft II of all games. Fun times.

@efran @brandonwilson yeah that’s my feeling. I just don’t like Windows. There is some amazing hardware out there, in many cases better than Apple. But they use Windows and I just don’t enjoy it...at all.
