Alma Thomas was an African American abstract painter. I first came across one of her paintings titled "Starry Night and the Astronauts" at the art museum and I thought the style was really interesting. There is a pattern, color theory and rhythm to it.

At first glance, it looks simple. A bunch of strokes in a straight line.

I was totally wrong about my assumptions when I tried a similar style for one of my paintings. This is how it turned out.

Good start but there is a lot to improve. There is so much more to that painting that you need to keep in mind from a technical perspective.

  • Brush size
  • Brushstroke
  • Paint left on the brush
  • Type of paint
  • If you mixed the paint to get a certain color, do you have enough or can you recreate that color?
  • Overall theme
  • The symmetry of the painting

I am going to paint a few more to get comfortable. I love this style of painting.

I also spent some time to understand Alma Thomas background. The fact I find it fascinating is that at heart she was a teacher more than anything and she kept painting until she died. I would have taken her class.
