I've been trying to read more books recently but my attention span seems to have gotten shorter. It used to be I could sit with a book for hours on end and not be distracted. Now I find myself tempted to multitask somehow while reading, which is terrible for reading and absorbing.
I think it's partly a result of trying to be more productive over the years. I've gotten so used to trying to maximise my time that focusing on one solitary task has begun to feel like I'm wasting time. Even watching movies and listening to music now requires conscious effort to focus completely.
I know many people happily consume content while on their phone and scrolling through social media. But it feels like a shallow experience for me. It's like skimming a story, you miss all the little details that were included. One of the great joys in experiencing good content is seeing the intricacies behind it. You can never spot those details when you're only paying half attention to it.
Now I'm trying to restore my attention span. Not with any special tactics but by simply being conscious of every time I get distracted and aiming for short periods of focus on a single thing. Hopefully, with time I'll be able to get lost in a good book again.
