A coworker of mine had a coughing fit one day after taking a drink. I asked her if she was okay, and of course she couldn't answer me because she was in the middle of a big coughing fit. We need a universal sign when someone is coughing that lets us know without words that someone either is or is not okay. Anyway, she remarked that several years ago she had bronchitis that resulted in scar tissue forming in her throat. She said that anytime she eats or drinks anything cold it irritates her throat, which causes coughing fits. My suggestion to her was take a cough drop that has been kept in the freezer so that it would both irritate and soothe her throat.

I know someone who was trying to kick an addiction to sugar. He avoided drinking any soda. He made healthy choices when grocery shopping. He eliminated all candy and sweets from the house. After only a couple days he got desperate and found a bag of old cough drops in the cupboard and starting eating them like candy. In a matter of minutes, the bag that was 3/4 full, was completely empty except for all the wrappers. Perhaps he, too, could have benefited from having the cough drops stored in the freezer. Out of sight, out of mind.
