The first few years we had a routine. Wake up early - catch the first bus to downtown and we eat breakfast together. We would go to a McDonald's by the college. The steak and egg bagel sandwich from the breakfast menu.

Then we would go our separate ways to school and work at the college.

We used the bus and subway to get around town for two years. After saving some money, we bought an old 1987 white Toyota Camry.

It was magnificent.

We were in tears when mom first drove it home. We finally had a ride. I doubt people with an S-class Mercedes felt as proud. After all those days of waiting in the cold and heat for the bus, we had a car to get around.

Only mom had her driver's license at that time so she was the one driving the car in the beginning. As first the highways were very intimidating. So as mom drove, the rest of us siblings were in charge of checking her blind spot. We got bold and ventured further into Baltimore than we did with public transport. We discovered a mall where you could see movies for $3.

We were moving up.

@brandonwilson - I often explain to people that in America, a car is not a luxury but a necessity.
