I am reading the 6-part series on HBR, The Poor and Unhappy. My thoughts on the first part here.

The second part is about impact on our happiness based on our decisions regarding time vs money.

Here are some decisions I have to make almost all every day:

Do I take the public transportation or ride share to go back and forth from work to home?

Public transportation costs $2.25 per ride. Takes about 30-40 min each way and I get about 20 minutes of walk time.

Rideshare cost depends. If it's a pool or shared ride and it costs about $5 per ride and takes 15 - 30 min each ride and if it's a regular ride, it costs $8 - $10 and takes about 15 min on a regular day with good weather and traffic.

These are the questions I ask myself when I am making a decision:

To go home from work -

  • What am I doing when I get home?
  • Is it time sensitive?
  • How bad is the traffic/weather?
  • Do I want to cook dinner or eat something that I already made/easy to make?
  • Do I have the energy to walk?
  • Do I have any discounts from rideshare apps?
  • Do I want to be alone for the night and not talk to anyone?

To go to work from home -

  • How bad is the traffic/weather?
  • Do I want to get some extra sleep that day?
  • What am I making for breakfast and how long will it take?
  • Am I going to work out before work?
  • Do I have any discounts from rideshare apps?
