Do you know what's the easiest way to get tons of followers on Twitter without adding 16k to the accounts that you follow? Just follow everyone slowly, and if they will find you interesting — they will follow you back. When they do it or when a week passes since you followed them — simply unfollow. People will not notice you unfollowed them and will continue following you, and you can still stay at your “0 following”. Yesterday I wrote about reciprocity, and this method is yet another exploitation of this good practice.
Humans are constantly adapting to the environment they are in so similar to all dark patterns it could even have a negative effect in the future. The consequence that is likely to happen is obviously that everyone will ignore people who are following them or at least stop seeing being followed as something valuable even if they are not famous (social media celebrities don't care about individual followers, they care about numbers so they don't reciprocate). Similar to “subscribe to our newsletter and get a free ebook” this method will gradually fade away and become unreliable so “growth hackers” will have find other good practices to exploit.
So, how do you actually grow your Twitter following? If there was an answer to that question — everyone would be doing it. And first you have to answer why you need more followers. Maybe there are other ways to solve this problem, without more followers and without Twitter at all.
