I wish they would cure sleep, but only for me

Imagine if you didn't need sleep.

Like - it just wasn't a factor in your life. You never felt tired and/or grumpy, never got the yawns, never suffered cognitive impairment because you'd missed your daily dose of unconsciousness.

It would be great, but only if everyone else still had to sleep. Otherwise "they" would just make you work for 16 hours instead of 8 hours.

Imagine - everyone else gets ready and tucks themselves into bed. You go to your nightshift job where you're earning mad coin. Or work on your creative projects and actually get somewhere with them. Or just blob out and become a Netflix aficionado if you felt like it.

You would also have an immediate advantage over literally every single other person on the planet because let's face it, being an adult is simply learning to function through various levels of sleep deprivation. You would not be sleep deprived. You would be "asomnolent". There would be nothing (barring intentional ingestion of substances) impairing your cognition.

Don't get me wrong. I love sleep, I enjoy it very much. But - sleep has a very fast-and-loose relationship with me. 99 times out of 100 I have no issue getting to sleep. My head hits the pillow and within a few minutes, I'm out. But I seem to always wake up at 6 am or earlier, every day, without fail. I just can't sleep in. So like most normal adults, I just learn to function through various levels of sleep deprivation.

I can hear you now, you smug lot - "well, just go to bed earlier! DUH!"

Yeah, sure. I spend 10-11 hours a day working and travelling to and from work. I have kids that need attention for 2-3 hours in the evening. Then there are the household chores that don't do themselves. So we're already well over half the day gone in doing all the work involved in just existing and not being a shitty parent. If you want any leisure, creative, or social time, it needs to get crammed in between all of this. If I "went to bed earlier" (like that's even a thing) it would be at the expense of the stuff that actually makes up my real life. Sacrifice my real life for sleep? No way.

What would I do if I didn't have to sleep?

- get a nightshift job to earn mad coin
- finally finish writing my damn novel
- study
- watch Netflix/play PlayStation/goof off on the internet

In summary, if I didn't have to sleep, I could have more of my real life instead of blowing all my time being employed.

    I really like the idea of a terminator like person who doesn't have to sleep. I have a character in one of my fictional stories who has this situation going on for him.

    I heard professional American-football players talk about how they're willing to sacrifice like years off their lives for the money. I also heard about Olympic athletes saying yes they would sacrifice decades off their life just so that they could have a goal medal guarantee.

    would you sacrifice 20 years off your life-total for this ability? I mean, assuming that you live longer than 60 years, you'll be getting a deal... since if you live 60 years you sleep roughly 20 years of it...

    But would you be okay leaving your family 20 years earlier? That's the question, man!

      @abrahamKim that is the question - quality of life also comes into play.... would I want 10 or 20 extra years if I had to spend them immobile or in pain? hmmmm....... but I guess curing the side effects of sleep deprivation along with the sleep itself would be one of my showstopper conditions :-D

    @samlloyd haha don't we all. Did you know some people are born with a gene that makes them sleep for only 3-4 hours to be active like regular people?

      @itsabhinaya I've heard of that, I'm jealous. I know other famous people only slept for an hour or so a few times a day. Can't remember who.

      @samlloyd @itsabhinaya Those people exist but are extremely rare. Maybe that will be the answer. Some type of gene therapy that enables human beings to get by on less sleep. Until then, sleep is extremely important and chronic sleep deprivation (less than 6 hours per night) leads to a host of problems both short-term and long-term. I have been having my own challenges with my sleep schedule trying to adjust from the last two years of working for and traveling to a client on the east coast while I am 2-3 hours behind.

      @itsabhinaya @brandonwilson that's what they don't tell you about the "digital nomad" remote work lifestyle right? Sure you can work from home in your underwear but don't get pissy when you're scheduled for a 3am with the CEO...

      @samlloyd @itsabhinaya Yes it's all glitz and glamor with your bare feet propped up while on the beach sipping a drink with an umbrella. I experience similar issues with clients in a different timezone. Thankfully it's still US and not somewhere else in the world.
