Usually Moriah's asking me to hang out with her all the time. She can't do things alone. But since last week she's been occupied. At first, I thought it had something to do with me, but seeing all the pictures of her on Facebook makes me realize it's actually the play, and all the parties with her cast and crew members that go along with it.

I find it nice not to be bothered by her all the time, but I feel uneasy about some loose ends. Like what happened to the lease she's been begging me to sign for the past month. Did that desire just disappear? Or is she just occupied for the time being, poised to return to such business next week.

And did Jim break up with her yet?

I think about my relationship with Moriah. I don't think we'll be friends next year. The only reasons we would stay friends is if there was some external reason tying us together. In this case, it was living together. And now that I've decided not to, I know our friendship is on borrowed time.

Strangely, thinking of this reminds me of Jim's situation with her. Only, I find Jim  more bold. Shouldn't I simply do the equivalent of 'breaking-up' with Moriah? Yet there wasn't an equivalent to 'breaking-up' with friends. You couldn't just rip it off like a bandaid. Friendships had to die slowly through signals of detachment sent and received slowly, over time. What did this say about friendship? And love?

I put a piece of Orbit hardshelled mint gum in my mouth and take one last look into the mirror. My hair is straightened, and I'll be ready to head straight to the auditorium in the evening. I switch off the fluorescent overhead and walk out the door with my earbuds already in. I insert my key to lock the door when I hear a soft voice saying hello.

I turn around. It's my roommate Sunny.
