Our life is made up of many different parts:

  • Family & Partner
  • Friends
  • Work
  • Hobbies
  • Health (workouts, eating)

I think we're feeling most content when all of these are in a balance. When not one or two areas dominate over all others.

For example, working like crazy and neglecting your health and family is not sustainable for long. Likewise, not working can leave you feeling like there's no purpose.

I don't feel very much in balance right now. I'm spending a lot of time working and working out. Which is not a bad thing. But I feel I'm trying to overcompensate for another area which is lacking ... my friends. I basically live on the other side of the planet and only see them every couple of month. And I miss them a lot!

(This made me realize that being with your partner is not enough. You need friends too.)

That leads me to go crazy in other areas, especially working out. A great perk is that I've never been this fit, but I almost think it's getting a bit too much. Right now, I'm working out twice a day, almost every day of the week. It's a great way of shutting the mind off and not having to think about what I'm missing right now.

Have you heard of the new book "passion paradox"

The authors argue in it that it's not in the moment balance that matters but rather balance over time. So they talk about how it's better to be passionate and all in on something for months or weeks or years at a time, and switch around.

Here's a podcast featuring them if you're interested:

I really benefited from the book. Read it just the past two weeks. It doesn't have any breakthrough knoweledge or info but definitely a nice insight that acts as a reminder to do good be fulfilled and prosper. Hope you get a chance to check it out.

@abrahamKim I find most books nowadays don't present anything super new, but hearing things you already know from a different perspective or in a different way is often enough to spark some new personal insights.
