Why do people sound so proud when they say they are good at multitasking? This is not a good thing.
Research has proven that multitasking actually makes us dumb and decreases our ability over time to stay focused on a single task.
If we are not being distracted by a notification on our phone/laptop/tablet or by another person, we are constantly seeking distractions ourselves because keeping focused on a single task easily gets boring.
In order to do our best work, we have to concentrate though. Let's forget the multitasking BS that makes us feel so productive, and instead adopt something that's actually beneficial: Monotasking (also called single-tasking).
It means dedicating ourselves to a single task and minimizing potential interruptions.
Here is how to do it:
- Decide how long you want to single-task. You need to know that you CAN look at your phone again eventually.
- Turn off all notifications and avoid any other interruptions. This might mean locking yourself inside a room alone.
- Keep focused no matter what. Push through the uneasiness inside you that craves a distraction.
- Repeat as desired.
The outcome? You might feel that the time was well spent, that you actually go something done you can be proud of.
