"Roll down your window and tell that guy to back the eff off!" I said.

"No. What if he has a gun or something?" she said.

"He doesn't have a gun. He's picking his nose. And isn't positioned correctly. Doesn't he know what he's doing?" I said.

She refused to roll down her window.

His lane was merging and I had already let somebody in front of me. His proper position was behind me.

I looked in my mirror to check out the situation. The guy behind me was not letting anybody merge.

What a dick, I think to myself.

I roll down the window and make eye contact with the guy to my right. I give him the go-ahead signal - indicating I'll wait for him to go when the light turns green. He acknowledged my courtesy.

I could have raged. It never gives much satisfaction. I could have ensured I didn't let him in and he would have gotten in eventually. It doesn't help anybody.

Today, I just gestured kindly. He appreciated it. The dickhead behind me got the clue and left some space in case other people need to drive as well. He's not the dickhead all the time. Sometimes I am.

Today, I wasn't. It felt good.

"Why did you act so nice all of a sudden when you just asked me to roll my window down and be mean to him?" my wife asked.

"You didn't want to play that game, so I figured I'd play a different game." I replied.

@brianball I LOOOVEEE my road rage, my only chance to really go for it and lose all the social inhibitions :-)))
when we drive I always comment that Im going to jump out of the car and scream at the asshole or bang the car with... an umbrella (LOL) and <<"No. What if he has a gun or something?">> he says. Well, maybe not exactly a gun, it's Europe here...

@brianball love the last sentence! There's probably some life lesson in there ?

@jasonleow - It felt like a life lesson in the moment as well. If I can't win with that game, why not try a different one?

@brianball Why can't people understand the zipper method? Southern Californians are notorious for being terrible at merging. But as you did, I've been trying to err on the side of kindness and assuming positive intent. And whatever, sometimes people are assholes. No sense letting MYSELF get all enraged and worked up. Within reason, of course :P

@nicksimard - true. The biggest 'distinction' I've made to help me deal with traffic? Instead of calling it 'my' lane, I now try to think 'our' lane.

Oh, you want to get into our lane? Sure. Makes sense. ( I don't own the lanes. )
