Like money, social media is neutral. People these days are quick to say social media is terrible and bad for your health, but it wasn't always that way. When the internet was born, it was this beautiful sharing of "this is what the world looks like on my end". It was only a matter of time before the trolls figured out how to use it, and then came all the negativity. And then came all the business people wanting to monetize the time people spent using these platforms. But these apps themselves, are neutral. They can only enhance and bring out what's already there in the first place. The culture of "keeping up with the Joneses" has been present way before the internet. And pubs used to be the only place where people would come together to hear about the latest news, catch up with friends. Social media helped us with all of that, but on a grander scale. To start bringing people's health, before money, starts with people. Instagram is testing right now to remove the number of "likes" on their platform, and seeing how it affects the users mental health. It's definitely a step in the right direction.
