I know the struggle because I conquered it. Here's an example:

Acquaintance/Stranger: "What kinda music do you listen to?"

My Thoughts: Well I could tell them that I'm into a lot of genres that they probably think are weird or have never heard of or I can be generic about it and lie for the sake of simplicity and to avoid too many further questions. If I tell the truth, I could be laughed at and I'm not at all prepared to take that.

My Response: "Everything".

I used to struggle with social anxiety and my differences (there are a ton) became my enemy. Everything that separated me from everyone else was game for questioning and I didn't like that so I'd attempt to appear as boring and average as possible. Don't do this. It kills your soul. You eventually forget who you are and you have to slowly build yourself out of blocks again and its not pretty.

Build yourself out of blocks again by answering the following questions (hold nothing back and use full sentences):

  1. What are your religious beliefs?
  2. What are your political beliefs?
  3. Who are your idols?
  4. What kind of music do you like?
  5. What is your favorite movie?
  6. What is your favorite TV show?
  7. What do you do for fun?
  8. What makes you unique?

When you write these answers down, you will have no reason to lie because you know these answers are for your eyes only. That's the thing. The reason you lied in the first place was for simplicity, convenience, and fear of judgement.

To be a more authentic you, study your answers (yes this is necessary), and when someone asks you one of these questions or a question involving part of your answer, be sure to answer fully, honestly, and accordingly.

What if they don't like the authentic me?

Good. Any honest man/woman has people that don't like them. Simply stop associating with people that do not like the authentic you. If you ever want to actually feel alive, you must stop caring so much about what people think of you.

@jdaniel_richer completely agree with this. I've been guilty of the same and I'm working on being more honest.
