As a freelancer who works remotely for clients all over the world I find it really hard to take a break. Emails, Slack pings and Trello notifications come in at varying times throughout the day (and night). I find it really hard to not look at them when they come in, even if it's late at night or early in the morning.
The problem is that as soon as I read these notifications a reaction is set off which immediately swallows my attention, urging me to take action. This is a really bad idea because my brain begins to switch back into work-mode, my stress levels elevate and I oftentimes feel guilty for not working on the task at hand.
One of the most important things to do as a freelancer is to set some sort of working schedule just like that of a regular 9-5. I need to learn to take a break and recharge so that I can put in a productive session of work the next day. It's hard to do and I'm no expert at it, but it's the only way. Otherwise I find myself resenting my work and burning out.
What do you think? Are there any freelancers out there who have some good strategies for a good work / life balance?
