Prologue: The Unravelling pt.5

The tension between keeping real and selling out cut through the heart of the college. Surely things couldn’t not continue as they had done before. No parents in their right mind would endorse a school that gave seventeen and eighteen year olds the freedom to do such insane things even if what they did gave them the chance to transcend almost anything found in decades of normal civilian life much less in the last two years of normal high school.

Slowly at first then quickly, The College was sanitised. Unlike some of my friends, I don’t think that it was a conspiracy by the board. Instead, successive Heads of College attempted to make the campus safer and a bit more reasonable.

Inevitably, the students protested every change. Ironically, we were conservative students pushing against a progressive administration, fighting for every last bit of what we imagined Atlantic College to be.

But we really didn’t stand a chance. Since the college only had two year groups of students (as it was the last two years of high school) it was relatively easy for them to tighten the rules and only fight one wave of protests. The generation who had known the good life were graduating anyway and all the freedoms were merely echoes by the time the new batch came in.
