I guess this was it. I was kind of happy. I expected absolutely nothing from this festival and I came into it feeling like shit. Standing in front of Cassie and her parents, I felt a lot less shit. I thought I might as well say a proper goodbye since I was never going to see her again.
I mean what are the odds that we met in the first place? Randomly choosing a festival, Theo having the shits and me just striking up a conversation. I guess you don't win if you don't roll the dice and God I don't think I rolled it as much as dropped it by accident and it came up with a seven.
There was nothing left to lose and like a naked gambler, I come clean. With her parents right there, I clear my throat and say something along the lines of:
"Hey, Cassie. I think you're remarkable"
I pause, for dramatic effect.
"You're a bloody strong and resilient person".
I give her a hug and she holds me tightly. As I let go, she hangs onto my elbows as if she were falling off a cliff.
"Hey, where are you going to be this summer?"
"England" I say.
"I'll be there too! Do you think we can meet?"
"Yeah I think we should". I give her a wink, wave bye to her parents (her mum was almost on the verge of crying, I think) and walk into the darkness.
