- Engaging or exciting and holding the attention of curiosity.

- arousing a feeling of interest

Isn't it interesting that we use the word interesting in situations when we find something that we are curious about?

Phrases like this:

  • Oh that's interesting!
  • I am interested in that.
  • hmm that looks interesting.
  • That's very interesting to hear.
  • I am interested in learning more about that.
  • I am not interested in it.

The word looses its meaning when you use it too many times in a short period of time. I found myself doing that recently. Especially, when I am learning something new during founder calls or listening to a new topic for the first time. Here are some synonyms I can start to use instead of the word interesting:

  • Remarkable
    • Oh that's remarkable.
  • Curious
    • I am curious about that.
  • Impressive
    • hmm that looks impressive.
  • Exciting
    • That's very exciting to hear.
  • Intriguing
    • I am intrigued to learn more about that.
  • Compelling
    • That is not compelling to me.

They all have similar meaning but adds variety to sentences and express a different feeling.

I am curious to know if there is a word that you use often without even thinking about it?

Good resolve. I use interesting a lot as well, but am aware of it and try my best to use more precise words for the given situation.

Another word that I feel has lost its meaning due to overuse is -- in the context of describing people -- the word nice.

If you go on a date with someone, and you hear that the other person simply described you as nice??? well they just couldn't think of anything better than... aka you didn't make much of an impression lol

@abrahamKim Very true. I tend to replace nice with great.

@itsabhinaya - oh wow - you made me realize how much I use that word... non stop... especially in informal settings. Need to make an effort to be more remarkable instead :)

@keni Yup, I started noticing how often it's being used around me as well and it makes me cringe now when I hear it too often in a short period of time.
