Destin of SmarterEveryDay released a YouTube video titled The Future of War, and How It Affects YOU (Torpedo/Missiles vs Ship) - Smarter Every Day 211.

First off, Destin is a remarkable and curious individual. He prefaces this video with his mission: "The world is interesting and amazing, and one of my favorite things to do is to be handed a complex question and work with a team of competent individuals to arrive at a solution to that. Afterwards, I love sharing that path of discovery with others."

Then he proceeds to interview those in the Army and gets the opportunity to interview four-star General Brown. The idea that I found the most fascinating was the idea of multi-domain operations. It used to be that we thought of warfare in three domains: sea (Navy), land (Army), and air (Air Force). Now there's two more domains: space (satellite) and cyber. Furthermore, General Brown believes there's a sixth domain: the human domain. Also known as Phase Zero, or pre-conflict, this is demonstrated by the Ukraine-Russia ordeal. Russian operatives were able to exert enough influence, so that they won the conflict before it actually started. The velocity and diffusion of human communications is powerfully weaponizable.

So strategizing in multi-domain operations is like a game of 3D chess. The possibilities of configurations of battle strategies while actively considering all domains is different from linear strategizing. And this requires collaboration between actors of all domains, each independently learning how to operate.

The General also spoke of the soldier as possessing holistic traits: the ability to solve a complex problem in a timely manner with a creative solution, the ability to thrive in ambiguity and chaos, the ability the make the right decision, the ability to know when you do/don't have the right information, common sense, intelligence, training education. Now the method is to give people a problem, and let them come to their own solution.

"War is changing," Destin acknowledges, as he continues to film (the YouTube video of which they both argue, is one of the weapons/countermeasures of the Army Pacific--maybe of deterrence, education, and support). It's the American Spirit to empower people that multi-domain operations takes advantage of, General Brown argues, that distinguishes us from other countries.

"Knowing is half the battle," Destin is reminded. Subversive maneuvers in the cyber domain are based on deception--of peace, quiet, subtlety, inconsequentiality. We all have a place in either fostering or countering the threat of division. Proactive, intentional unity about what we share and being self-aware is incredibly important online, with civility and political grace.
