You Don't Need To Write Anything Profound, Just Real

The title is something I always need to remind myself. Not just when it comes to writing but when I'm creating anything. There's this desire I have to write or make something that's profound and deep. I'd like to create things that make people feel the way I feel when I see something great.

This desire just leads to a creative block and a blank page. In trying to simply be profound my work suffers. It feels less authentic and it takes more effort to complete.

What I've learned is rather than trying to be profound or deep I need to focus on being authentic. The only unique thing we all have is our own perspective. Sharing that unique perspective in whatever we create is more important than simply trying to be great.

Greatness takes time and effort and usually starts off a bit shit but when it's authentic that can shine through the muck. My favourite artists all started off sharing their unique perspective whilst perfecting their craft. What attracted me to their work wasn't perfection or greatness but being able to relate to their stories.

I think it's okay to want to create something great but most things aren't immediately great and that's okay. That desire shouldn't come at the cost of creating anything at all or ignoring the value of your own perspective.

โ€œThe only difference is you. Thatโ€™s why you have to be that honest. You put so much of yourself into what you do. Because in the end youโ€™re the only thing thatโ€™s different. Youโ€™re the only thing that sets it apart." - Mac Miller
